The Belleville Fire Department responded to thirty-seven (37) fire incidents and seventy-five (75) EMS incidents during the calendar week of January 9 to January 15, 2002. Here are some of the highlights:
- On January 9, at 3:34 p.m., all units responded to a restaurant on Franklin Avenue for a reported fire. Firefighters arrived on scene and found an electrical heater smoking within a wall. The heater was disconnected and it was removed along with the wallboard materials, which were smoldering. There was no damage to the rest of the building and it was allowed to remain open.
- On January 11, at 1:42 p.m., Truck 1 was dispatched to Branch Brook Drive for a power line burning. Firefighters found a high-voltage primary wire arcing in the street after an animal came in contact with it. They stood by until PSE&G arrived to remedy the problem.
- On January 13, at 1:54 p.m., all units responded to a residence on Fairview Place for a reported natural gas leak. Firefighters arrived and found a heavy concentration of natural gas quickly filling the house from a broken flex-pipe in the kitchen. The gas supply was shut off in the basement and the house was ventilated before an explosion could occur. The owners were advised to have a plumber repair the supply pipe.
- On January 14, at 6:44 p.m., Engine 2 responded to an address on Union Avenue for a reported suspicious package tainted with an unknown substance. Firefighters and police investigated the situation and found no hazardous materials and the scene was cleared.
- On January 15, at 5:23 p.m., Engine 2 reported a pedestrian struck outside of the firehouse at Washington Avenue & Division Avenue. An EMS unit was dispatched to the location while firefighters began to treat the victim for injuries. The pedestrian suffered a serious leg injury and was transported to University Hospital Trauma Center in Newark. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Police Department.
