The Belleville Fire Department responded to fifty-eight (58) fire incidents and ninety (90) EMS incidents during the calendar week of January 1 to January 8, 2002. Here are some of the highlights:
- On January 1, at 3:59 AM, Engine 2 was dispatched to Cortlandt Street for a car fire. Firefighters arrived and found a van fully involved up against a building. The fire also damaged a truck parked next to the van. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
- On January 2, at 2:25 PM, Engine 3 assisted a resident who was locked out of their house on Rocco Street. Firefighters used a ladder to gain entry for the resident.
- On January 4, at 2:33 PM, all units responded to Joralemon Street on a report of a fire. Engine 2 arrived to find a large outside fire in a parking lot near several vehicles. The flames were extinguished with several handlines before it extended to the vehicles. The fire was caused by unauthorized burning and the tenants were advised.
- On January 7, at 6:40 PM, all units responded to a house on Stephens Street for a reported fire. Firefighters found a fire burning in the ceiling of the dining room. The fire was extinguished and the electrical fixture was removed. The cause of the fire was determined to be old wiring that had shorted out. The homeowners were advised to call an electrician for repairs.
- On January 8, at 11:32 AM, all units responded to a business on Washington Avenue for fire alarm activation. Engine 2 arrived on scene and reported smoke from the second floor rear windows. The business was closed at the time, so firefighters forced entry into the building. They brought a hoseline to the second floor, where they found a fire burning in-between the floorboards with extension to the ceiling below. The fire was quickly extinguished and all units were back in service by 12:30 PM. The fire was caused by discarded cigarette materials and caused several thousands dollars in damage to the structure.
- On January 8, at 7:10 PM, Engine 3 was called to a residence on North 10th Street to assist PSE&G. A worker was called to the address for a gas leak and found a broken flex-pipe with gas filling the dwelling. Engine 3 ventilated the building and stood by until it was safe to re-enter and make the repairs.
