The Belleville Fire Department responded to forty-one (41) fire incidents and sixty-nine (69) EMS incidents during the calendar week of February 13 to February 19, 2002. Here are some of the highlights:
- On February 14, at 2:40 p.m., Engine 3 and EMS 1 responded to a residence on Harrison Street for a reported unconscious person. Firefighters arrived on scene and found a man in cardiac arrest. They used an external defibrillator and CPR, and the patient was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
- On February 14, at 7:03 p.m., all units responded to an address on Rossmore Place for a reported fire. Engine 2 arrived onscene and reported smoke coming from the third floor windows. Firefighters stretched a hoseline and made their way to the top floor, where they found residents trying to extinguish the flames. Firefighters took over and put out the fire. Additional firefighters from Truck 1 and Engine 3 brought in exhaust fans to ventilate the smoke. Damage was limited to some contents of the room, and all residents were allowed to return. The cause of the fire is listed as accidental.
- On February 16, at 1:08 a.m., Engine 2 and EMS 1 responded to the intersection of Floyd Street and Greylock Parkway for a serious motor vehicle accident. Firefighters arrived on scene and reported several injuries and an overturned car. Firefighters removed the injured persons and treated their injuries. EMS 1 transported patients, while Engine 2 called for mutual aid from Nutley and North Arlington for ambulances. Six persons were treated, three were transported to local hospitals.
- On February 16, at 8:40 a.m., all units responded to an address on Joralemon Street for a reported fire. EMS 1 and Truck 1 arrived on scene and reported fire and smoke showing from the second floor of an apartment building. Firefighters stretched in hoselines and extinguished a fire in an apartment unit. Additional firefighters from Engine 2 and Engine 3 stretched backup lines and searched for trapped occupants. The fire was limited to one unit with fire damage, and smoke and water damage to the rest of the building. The residents were forced to relocate, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
- On February 17, a 7:04 a.m., Engine 2 and EMS 1 responded to a church on William Street for an unconscious person. Firefighters arrived on scene and found police officers using an external defibrillator to shock the patient, who was in cardiac arrest. Firefighters assisted the police officers with CPR, and transported the person to Clara Maass in critical condition. The male patient was revived by the time they arrived at the emergency room.
- On February 17, at 11:40 p.m., all units responded to an address on Overlook Avenue for a reported fire. Engine 2 arrived on scene and reported a car fire burning up against an apartment building. Firefighters extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby structures. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and believed to be accidental.
- On February 18, at 11:04 a.m., Engine 3 responded to Mill Street for an oil spill. Firefighters found a garbage truck had burst an oil line, and fluids were on the street and lawn near a daycare center. Firefighters spread absorbent to contain the spill, while Nutley Haz-Mat and Battalion 2 were called to the scene. Company representatives from the garbage hauler arrived and assisted in the cleanup operation. The street was reopened after cleanup was complete.
